Olivier Metzler Aerts is a Belgian-Luxembourgish director of photography based in Brooklyn, NY.
Olivier first gained recognition for his cinematography work when he lensed “Fairydust” for director Sarah Gambles (2022 DGA Best African American Short, Official Selection 2023 San Diego Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, 2021 HollyShorts Film Festival, 2022 LA International Women’s Festival)
He went on to lens “River” for director Joshua Hernandez, which was an Official Selection at the OutFest Fusion Film Festival, the Philadelphia Latino Film Festival, and the Anita Film Festival in Miami. “River” also played as part of the Juried Competition for Best Shorts at the Gasparilla International Film Festival.
His most recent narrative projects include “Golden Bubbles” for director Weiran Zhu, and “Chulo” which marks the second collaboration with director Joshua Hernandez and was shot entirely in Puerto Rico.
In 2023, Olivier was a camera operator for “Legion 44”, the new feature documentary of director Leila Conners (“Ice on Fire,” “The Eleventh Hour”). The production traveled to Oman, Iceland, England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Lichtenstein as well as the West and East Coast of the United States of America among others.
For the past 2 years, Olivier has been working on a feature documentary for director Natasha Florentino that focuses on the privatization of public housing in New York City and the effects the demolition of NY public housing will have on its residents.
Olivier combines a keen sensibility for lighting and the emotional impact it has on an image with a passion for creating meaningful and poignant compositions that support a director’s creative vision.
